We’re about to go to the prom…or to hell. After a sold-out run in Los Angeles, Heathers: the Musical will be causing all sorts of damage at off-Broadway’s New World Stages this spring. The musical adaptation of the bloody ‘80s flick will begin performances March 15, 2014, with opening night set for March 31. Casting has not yet been announced.
Directed by Andy Fickman with choreography by Emmy winner Marguerite Derricks, Heathers features a book, music and lyrics by Tony nominee Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde) and Emmy winner Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness). The musical premiered at Los Angeles’ Hudson Backstage Theatre, where the cast included Barrett Wilbert Weed as Veronica, Ryan McCartan as J.D., Sarah Halford as Heather Chandler, Kristolyn Lloyd as Heather Duke and Elle McLemore as Heather McNamara.
In Heathers, Westerberg High is terrorized by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place—six feet under. The 1988 film featured Winona Ryder as Veronica, Christian Slater as J.D. and Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker as Heather, Heather and Heather.
